Once common throughout Ireland, the Barn owl was said to have been seen nesting in St Stephens green and roosting in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin in the mid 19th century. The Irish Barn owl population is now sadly concerning, with efforts being made to install special nesting boxes across farmland areas. Still mainly wintering here in Ireland, they are usually spotted in the South-West at night.
In European mythology, like in Greece, the owl was sacred to Pallas Athene, Goddess of wisdom and victory. In Ireland though they were viewed as an object of humour where in Donegal a person who thought they had a good singing voice, but in fact did not, was known as a  ‘Sréachóg Reilige’ - a ‘churchyard screecher’
